  • Description

HELICOPTERS OF THE ROYAL NAVY ARE NOW PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR GHURKA UNITS IN SARAWAK PATROLLING THE THOUSAND-MILE BORDER WITH INDONESIA. AIR SUPPORT HAS BEEN CALLED IN BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTIES POSED BY THE WILD MOUNTAIN COUNTRY, COVERED WITH THICK JUNGLE AND INHABITED ONLY BY A FEW NOMADIC TRIBESMEN.

THE HELICOPTERS HAVE THE TASK OF FINDING AND PICKING UP THE GHURKAS WHO, FINISHING THEIR SUPPLIES, HAVE TO RELY ON LIGHTING SMOKE FIRES TO SIGNAL IN THE PILOTS. BOTH LANDING AND TAKING OFF ARE PERILOUS OPERATIONS; JUNGLE VINES ALONE FORM A TRICKY PROBLEM, BECOMING ENTANGLED WITH LANDING GEAR.

MANY PATROLS TAKE UP TO THREE WEEKS TO CROSS A SINGLE MOUNTAIN RIDGE, SOMETIMES AT THE RATE OF 1,200 YARDS (1092 METRES) A DAY. BUT ONCE AIRBORNE, THEIR JOURNEY BACK TO BELAGA BASE IS ONLY A MATTER OF HOURS. THEY ARE FERRIED BACK FOUR AT A TIME IN THE WESSEX HELICOPTERS. THEN, AFTER A BRIEF REST AND RE-EQUIPPING AT BASE, THE PATROLS STRIKE OUT AGAIN DEEP INTO THE JUNGLE.
