  • Description

The Egyptian Prosecutor-General, Ibrahim Kalyoubi, announced in Cairo on Wednesday (26 April) that Egyptian authorities had detained a group which was connected with the Italian Red Bridages. He alleged the group had planned to sabotage the Egyptian-Israeli peace talks in Cairo last December.

SYNOPSIS: Mr Kalyoubi told a press conference in Cairo that 24 people had been detained by police pending further investigations. They included three Swiss nationals, a West German female student, and Palestinians and Jordanians. Mr Kalyoubi said the group had connections with three guerrilla organisations: the Italian Red Brigades, plus a splinter group of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), and an Iraq-based Palestinian faction which had split from the Fatab organisation. According to police, the group had planned to murder Egyptian public figures and noted foreigners living in Egypt. Later, an official said the police had only recently caught the group.
