  • Description

IN ZAMBIA, THE TRADE OF CHARCOAL BURNING IS BECOMING A BIG BUSINESS IN WHICH EVEN UNSKILLED MEN CAN EARN A GOOD LIVING. SMOKELESS CHARCOAL IS POPULAR WITH ZAMBIAN HOUSEWIVES FOR INDOOR FIRES, AND IT'S ALSO USED IN COPPER SMELTERS IN THE IMPORTANT COPPER BELT.

THE PROFESSIONAL CHARCOAL PRODUCERS' CO-OPERATIVE, FORMED LAST YEAR AND BASED AT NDOLA, HAS 1,000 MEMBERS IN THE COPPER BELT. SOME 300,000 BAGS OF CHARCOAL ARE PRODUCED EACH MONTH, WITH MOST OF THE CHARCOAL BURNING DONE IN PLOTS OF FOREST LAND ALLOCATED BY THE GOVERNMENT.

THE ONLY TREES THAT PRODUCE FIRST-CLASS CHARCOAL AT ONE "MUTON-DO" AND THE VERY HARD "MUBANGA." WHEN A TREE IS FELLED, IT'S CHOPPED INTO SEVEN FOOT (2 METRE) LENGTHS WHICH ARE PILED INTO A HEAP, COVERED WITH EARTH, AND SET ON FIRE. SPECIAL CARE IS TAKEN SO THAT EARTH AROUND THE LOGS DOESN'T DAMPEN THE FIRE.

THE "FIBILI", AS THE KILNS ARE CALLED, ARE CAREFULLY EXAMINED FOR POLES AS TOO MUCH AIR WOULD ALLOW THE LOGS TO BURN TOO FAST, PRODUCING TOO MUCH ASH AND NOT ENOUGH CHARCOAL. THE "FIBILI" TAKE UP A WEEK TO BURN OUT, DEPENDING ON SIZE, AND HAVE TO BE CONSTANTLY WATCHED, SO THEY CHARCOAL BURNERS HAVE TO LIVE NEARBY.

A PILE OF LOGS ABOUT FOUR FEET (ABOUT 1 KLM) HIGH AND EIGHT FEET LONG (ABOUT 2???? KLMS) LONG PRODUCES ABOUT TEN BAGS OF CHARCOAL SELLING THEIR CHARCOAL BY THE ROADWAY. BURNERS GET ABOUT SEVEN SHILLINGS A BAG, OUT THEY GET ABOUT 12 SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE A BAG IF THEY HAVE A TRUCK TO TAKE THEIR PRODUCT TO MARKET.

FOR SOME, CHARCOAL BURNING MEANS ANNUAL INCOMES OF THOUSANDS OF POUNDS, WITH FLEETS FOF TRUCKS TRAVELLING ALL OVER THE COPPER BELT. TO OTHERS NOT IN THE "TYCOON" CLASS, THE PRODUCTION OF "BLACK COPPER" AS ITS WIDELY CALLED -- STILL PROVIDES A FAIR INCOME.
