Fanned by winds int wake of a 70 m.p.h. dust-storm, a fire in Delhi got out of control, spread over several miles and reduced about 50 shops and 20 houses to ashes. Every fire engine from Delhi and surrounding areas was involved in the fight but it was not until rain started to fall, in the evening, that the blaze was brought under control. Railway traffic at Delhi junction was brought to a halt for several hours and when telegraph wire were brought down over a large area, the city was cut off from many main cities of India.
Next morning presented a pathetic picture, with unfortunate victims searching the rubble and ashes for charred belongings.
