  • Description

A giant airlift of twelve-thousand refugees, whose homes are endangered by a threatened North Vietnamese attack against pro-Government troops on the strategic "Plain of Jars" in Northern Laos, was completed Wednesday (Feb, 11th).

The massive five-day operation, mounted with American transport planes and Laotian trucks, involved the evacuation of all Laos and Lao Tong tribesmen living on the southern edge of the plain.

A shuttle- service lifted about two-thousand five-hundred people daily to the relative safety of make-shift villages about one-hundred-miles (160 KM) north-east of the capital, Vientiane.

The evacuation was ordered following the Pathet Lao's rejection of a Government plea for neutralisation of the plain and reports that a three-pronged offensive was planned - indicating fighting on a much greater scale than another attack in the same area earlier this year.
