  • Description

Women's basketball will be played in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1976... and the Russian team has already set its sights on winning the first gold medal for the sport. The team is currently touring the United States and on Monday night (May 20) had an easy 88-59 win over the American All-star team in Des Mines, Iowa. The Russians haven't been beaten in women's basketball since 1958 and they'll be hoping to join their men's side, which beat the United States in the Munich Olympic's final, in making it twin gold medals for basketball in Montreal in two years.

The Russian women have a distinct height advantage over the Americans. Eight of their 12 team members are over six feet tall and one is over seven feet. The Americans have only two who top the six foot mark.

SYNOPSIS: The United States Women's A.A.U Al-star team lost to the Russian National team eighty-eight to fifty-nine in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday night, but it didn't come as much of a surprise.

The Russians haven't lost in international competition since 1958...and just one look shows why. Eight of their twelve team members are over six-feet tall. While the American "A" team has two members who stand six-feet-one they have Ulama Seminova...a seven footer who weighs two-hundred-and fifty-four. Ulama stands under the basket palming down shots to the left and right. The Russians won't be overlooking their smaller opponents during the rest of the tour, but their sights are set on the 1976 Olympics when girl's basketball will be an official sport for the first time. This is Mike Jacobs reporting form Des Moines.
