Polling started yesterday (Sunday, February 24th) to elect members of the state assembly in Uttar Pradesh, Mrs. Gandhi's home state and power base for the Congress Party.
There was a reasonable turnout of voters on Sunday, and no incidents were reported to disturb the peace. But the campaigning has been bitter. The Congress Party has come under attack for its handling of the economy. Food prices have risen by 25 per cent in the past year and there are shortages of food and other essential goods.
