    CALLAGHAN: "Well I think I'll be able to say more to you about that after I've ?? ????? with the Foreign Minister and with President ????? I'm comforted by the fact that President Amin has said that he places great confidence in President Mobutu and that he leaves the conduct of these particular matters in the hands of President Mobutu. He has said that what President Mobutu tells him he will do, so that I'm discussion the affair of Mr. Hills and the other British subjects with President Mobutu against that background."

    Background: The British Foreign Secretary, Mr. James Callaghan, flew to the capital of Zaire, Kinshasa, from Rome on Tuesday (8 July) for talks with President Mobutu Sese Seko on the fate of the British lecturer Mr. Dennis Hills, imprisoned in Uganda.

    Mr. Hills had been facing execution by firing squad until last week when President Amin of Uganda went to Kinshasa and after talks with President Mobutu announced the repeal of the details sentence. However, he did not make it clear whether Mr. Hills was to be totally reprieved, and in making his ambiguous pronouncement said all auture diplomatic approaches on the issue should first be made to President ??
    Aboard the RAF VC-10 jet with Mr. Callaghan were his Deputy Under Secretary in Charge of African Affairs, the head of the East Africa Department and his political and press advisers.
