    Background: BOURJ AL-BARAJNEH BEIRUT, LEBANON

Lebanese police said renewed fighting between rival Palestinian factions at two refugee camps in Beirut left nine civilians dead and 22 wounded by Wednesday.

Witnesses said the latest battles forced most of the residents to flee to safer areas. They had been caught in the cross fire of artillery, mortar and machinegun fire since violence erupted in April. Fighting beginning on Tuesday night at the Bourj A-Barajneh and Shatila camps subsided at dawn on Wednesday. Palestinian sources said the battles took place between supporters of the dissident pro-Syrian leader Abu Musa and backers of Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) Chief. They said the attacks were prompted by Musa guerillas trying to move further into Shatila. At least 80 people have been killed and 340 wounded since April.
