  • Description

Recent student unrest in Greece turned into violence on Tuesday (20 March). About 800 protesting students occupied the Law faculty at Athens University and about 50 demonstrators and police were injured when riot squads were called in to evict them.

The majority of students have been boy setting classes since last January. They are demanding greater participation in academic policies and programmes, and are especially angry at legislation which threatens them with military call-up for staying away from classes.

The students gathered on the roof of the Law Faculty and chanted slogans: "Freedom, freedom... The people are sovereign... throw the police from the university". They sang the Greek national anthem and flew the Greek flag at half mast.

Security forces later arrested 25 students and a former economics professor, Mr. John Pesmazoglou. Mr. Pesmazoglou is a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Greece; he was dismissed a few months after the 1967 army coup.
