    POLICE AND STUDENTS BATTLED OUTSIDE ST. PAUL'S CHURCH IN FRANKFURT TODAY (SUNDAY) AS PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR OF SENEGAL, WAS PRESENTED WITH THE PEACE PRIZE OF THE GERMAN BOOK TRADE. SOME 1,500 STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER WEST GERMANY WERE OBJECTING TO THE AWARD GOING TO PRESIDENT SENGHOR BECAUSE HE HAD ALLOWED FRENCH TROOPS TO FIRE AT STRIKES IN SENEGAL.

    SEVERAL STUDENTS, INCLUDING FRANCO-GERMAN STUDENT LEADER DANIEL COHN-BENDIT ("DANNY THE RED"), WERE ARRESTED AFTER FIERCE CLASHES IN WHICH POLICE BARRICADES WERE STORMED AND THE POLICE WERE PELTED WITH STONES, BOTTLES AND BAGS OF DYE.

    PRESIDENT SENGHOR, THE 20TH RECIPIENT OF THE PEACE PRIZE, IS A LEADING AFRICAN POET AND THE BRIEF CITATION READ AT THE CEREMONY STATED THAT HIS POETRY WAS THAT OF A VOICE WITHOUT HATRED AND INSPIRED BY LUCIDITY AND COURAGE. HIS AIM WAS RECONCILIATION BASED ON UNIVERSAL CULTURE AND RESPECT FOR HUMAN DIGNITY, ACCORDING TO THE CITATION.

    A SQUAD OF MOUNTED POLICE GALLOPED IN TO CLEAR THE WAY FOR THE BLACK LIMOUSINE BRINGING PRESIDENT SENGHOR AND WEST GERMAN PRESIDENT HEINRICH LUEBKE TO THE CEREMONY. LATER, THE ISRAELI AMBASSADOR TO WEST GERMANY, MR ASHER BEN-NATHAN, WAS INSULTED AND HAD HIS PATH BLOCKED BY LEFT-WING STUDENTS WHEN HE ARRIVED AT THE FORMER CATHEDRAL WHICH IS NOW USED AS A PUBLIC BUILDING.

    THE PROTEST WAS ORGANISED BY THE FAR-LEFT SOCIALIST GERMAN STUDENT'S LEAGUE, WHICH OBJECTED TO PRESIDENT SENGHOR AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF COLONIALISM.

    FORMER RECIPIENTS OF THE PEACE PRIZE INCLUDE THE LATE ALBERT SCHWEITZER, THORNTON WILDER, VICTOR GOLLANCZ AND WEST GERMANY'S FIRST PRESIDENT, PROFESSOR THEODOR HUESS.
