    A TWENTY-MAN INVESTIGATING TEAM HAS ARRIVED IN MANILA (WEDNESDAY) TO LOOK INTO THE CRASH OF A U.S. MILITARY AIR TRANSPORT WHICH CLAIMED 77 LIVES.

    THE FOUR-JET C-135 TRANSPORT CRASHED SHORT OF ITS RUNWAY AT CLARK AIR FORCE BASE ON MONDAY NIGHT (11 MAY). IT CARRIED EIGHTY THREE PERSONS, ALL U.S. MILITARY PERSONNEL, ON A ROUTINE FLIGHT FROM HAWAII. SEVENTY-ONE OF THE PASSENGERS DIED IN THE CRASH, FIVE OTHERS DIED LATER AT CLARK AIR FORCE BASE HOSPITAL. SEVEN SURVIVORS REMAIN ALIVE AT THE HOSPITAL, AND ARE REPORTED TO BE IMPROVING ALTHOUGH STILL IN SERIOUS CONDITION.

    THE PLANE WAS DESCENDING IN A RAINSTORM WHEN IT APPARENTLY STRUCK A RADIO BEAM POLE. IT THEN CRASHED NEAR A ROAD, HITTING A TAXI-CAB AS IT CAME DOWN, AND BURST INTO FLAMES. ONE PASSENGER IN THE TAXI WAS KILLED. (CLARK AIR FORCE BASE IS 60 MILES NORTH OF MANILA.)
