The children went to the President's official residence at Mount Stanley for the party on 14 October. It was a happy and informal occasion and President Mobutu enjoyed presenting gifts to his young guests.
The children presented him with flowers and one of the young stars of the Congo National Radio and Television programme "Bonsoir les Petits" (Good Evening Children) expressed the good wishes of all the children to the Father of the Nation.
The President told the young ones: "Be wise to make the Congo a great and wise country and you will be happy."
Congratulatory messages flowed in to Mount Stanley throughout the day, which the President began by working as usual in his office. Pupils from Kinshasa's Primary and Secondary schools paraded through the town to a rally to mark the occasion, which was also celebrated in other parts of the country.
With his 40th birthday, President Mobutu reaches the minimum age for candidates in the Presidential Elections at the end of this month. He will be the only candidate.
