  • Description

The day of Communion, the fourth day of the 38th International Eucharistic Congress in Bombay began with the lighting of Christ's candle.

The most important feature of the day was the reception of First Holy Communion by children of Catholic parents.

The little girls in snow white dresses and veils, and boys in white trousers shirts and ties, all holding decorated candles and wearing solemn faces to suit the occasion, looked like a veritable land of angels on earth.

They filed up to the altar carrying baskets of host and chalices representing offerings of themselves to the holy Father. This very host, made of many, many grains of wheat, representing the many humans would later be returned changed into flesh of Christ.

As the Communicants walked forth, touching renderings of hymns 'Accept Almighty Father' in English and 'Wandana Le' in Hindi, were intoned.

After the Mass and offertory services were over the first Communicants marched up the altar flanked by their parents, to receive their FIRST HOLY COMMUNION the event supreme in the life of Catholics.
