  • Description

Spain's annual parade commemorating the victory of General Franco's forces over the republican armies 1939 was held for the first time in Barcelona May 8. Barcelona was the main republican stronghold during the 1936-39 civil war. General Franco took the salute, accompanied by all the members of the Government which has moved to Barcelona for three weeks. Several hundred thousand people lined the route of the parade - in the main boulevard, the Avenida del Generalissimo Franco.

Twenty thousand men - police, Civil Guards and members of the Armed Forces - took part in the parade in which guns of all calibres and 47-ton tanks rumbled down the Avenida. Foreign correspondents reported white clad ski troops striking the most picturesque note of the one and a half hour parade received the warmest applause of an apathetic crowd.

Rumours continued to circulate of General Franco's intention to hint on the country's political future.
