Background: Black militant Angela Davis, surrounded by armed guards, made her first court appearance in San Rafael, California on Wednesday (23 Dec.) to answer charges of murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy.
Teams of security men ringed the courthouse as Miss Davis arrived. Anyone entering the court building was searched. Miss Davis was in California after losing a court fight against extradition from New York. Angela Davis, an avowed Communist and a former philosophy teacher, is accused of helping to organise a kidnap attempt in which a superior court judge, two convicts, and an accomplice were shot dead last August.
On Wednesday the judge postponed her arraignment tow weeks to allow her to obtain California legal counsel and imposed a strict gag on all parties connected with the case. When Miss Davis appeared before the court she gave the revolutionary clenched fist salute to about 100 spectators and journalists.
