Background: INTRODUCTION President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire arrived in Ghana on Friday (4 February) for an official three-day state visit. President Mobutu will be holding talks with Ghana's Head of State General Ignatius Acheampong.
SYNOPSIS: President Mobutu received an enthusiastic welcome on his arrival. A band of local musicians and dancers held a parade in the streets of Accra to greet Zaire's head of state.
General Ignatius Acheampong and members of the ruling Supreme Military Council were on hand to meet President Mobutu. During the visit the two leaders are expected to discuss African problems, particularly the Rhodesia question as well as various other bilateral issues. One of the events on the agenda will be a visit to the industrial town of Tema, where Mr. Mobutu will have a chance to view some of Ghana's major enterprises.
Ghana recently expressed regret at Rhodesian Premier Ian Smith's rejection of the latest British proposals on the Rhodesian settlement. It called for the intensification of sanctions, armed struggle and the use of all forms of pressure against the Smith regime. In an official statement issued just over a week ago Ghana pledged to offer moral and material assistance to this struggle and called on all friendly nations of Africa to do likewise until majority rule is won. President mobutu's Government has also expressed concern over the breakdown of the negotiations.
