  • Description

A STEADY RISE IN THE NUMBERS OF VISITING TOURIST TO MACAO, THE TINY PORTUGUESE ENCLAVE ON THE SOUTHERN MAINLAND OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, IS GIVING HOPE OF A RETURN TO NORMALITY.

THE FLOW OF BIG-SPENDING TOURISTS, ATTRACTED BY THE GAMBLING AND VICE OPERATING IN MACAO, DRIED UP AT THE END OF LAST YEAR, WHEN THE 400-YEAR-OLD PORTUGUESE COLONY ERUPTED IN A SERIES OF PRO-MAOIST COMMUNIST DEMONSTRATIONS, AND VIOLENCE IN THE STREETS KEPT VISITORS AWAY.

BUT SINCE THE PORTUGUESE AUTHORITIES GAVE AWAY TO COMMUNISTS' DEMANDS, THE DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE SUBSIDED. NOW, THE STREETS ARE QUIET -- BUT THE TOURISTS ARE TRICKLING BACK.

THE ONLY THREAT HANGING OVER THE TINY COLONY IS A THREE-AWAY DISPUTE BETWEEN THE PORTUGUESE GOVERNOR, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP OF MACAO AND LOCAL COMMUNIST LEADERS, AND THE APPROACH OF CHINA'S NATIONAL DAY ON OCTOBER 1.

THE BISHOP HAS RESISTED DEMANDS BY THE COMMUNISTS THAT "PATRIOTIC" ACTIVITIES BE ALLOWED IN A CATHOLIC-RUN COLLEGE ON THE GROUND THAT OPENING THE COLLEGE TO COMMUNIST DOCTRINES WOULD MEAN IT CEASING TO FUNCTION AS A CATHOLIC TRAINING ESTABLISHMENT.

TWO CATHOLIC NEWSPAPERS WHICH PUBLISHED THE BISHOP'S STATEMENT HAVE BEEN SHUT DOWN BY THE PORTUGUESE GOVERNOR AND SOME OBSERVERS FEEL THAT OCTOBER 1 MAY PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FURTHER COMMUNIST DEMONSTRATIONS IN THE COLONY. ALREADY, POSTERS HAVE APPEARED, ACCUSING CHRISTIAN LEADERS OF PRACTISING THE WORST CRIMES UNDER THE CLOAK OF CHRISTIANITY.

THE COMMUNISTS ARE BUILDING HUGE CEREMONIAL ARCHES READY FOR A BUMPER PARADE THROUGHOUT MACAO FOR THEIR NATIONAL DAY, BUT IT IS FELT THAT IF THE COLONY CAN SURVIVE OCTOBER 1 WITHOUT SERIOUS OUTBREAKS OF VIOLENCE, IT MIGHT AGAIN BECOME A CENTRE FOR TOURISM.

A WEEK AGO, 16,000 PEOPLE VISITED THE COLONY OVER A LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND. BUT THE TESTING TIME WILL BE THE STAGING OF THE MACAO GRAND PRIX MOTOR RACES IN NOVEMBER, WHEN THOUSANDS OF MOTOR RACING ENTHUSIASTS NORMALLY CRAM INTO MACAO. THE EVENT WAS HELD LAST YEAR JUST BEFORE THE COMMUNIST DISTURBANCES AND PROVED A BIG SUCCESS.

A FEW MONTHS AGO, THERE WAS DOUBT ABOUT THE RACES BEING STATED THIS YEAR, BUT NOW THEY ARE DEFINITELY ARRANGED AND ALL THE INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE TOURISTS WILL COME BACK IN HUGE NUMBERS.

THEY WILL FIND THAT THE COMMUNISTS INFLUENCE HAS BEEN ACCEPTED IN THE PORTUGUESE COLONY. MAOISTS POSTERS ARE EVERYWHERE. THE NOW-ABANDONED BRITISH CONSULATE, TOGETHER WITH THE CATHOLIC ST JOSEPH'S COLLEGE ARE THE PRINCIPAL TARGETS FOR POSTERS AND SLOGANS, BUT MACAO'S 200,000 RESIDENTS -- MOST OF THEM CHINESE -- NO LONGER TAKE NOTICE OF THEM.
