  • Description

Work on new jet-plane runways and airport buildings was recently filmed by Visnews at Shannon Airport, Co. Limerick.

The government-sponsored airport development has already cost millions of pounds and current expense involved includes over 1 1/2 million for runways and more than 1 million for a new major building.

Another project at Shannon is the new fuelling system for jet-planes. Six unwieldy trucks formerly had to make a one-mile run to refuel a single plane. Now tanks with a capacity of over 2 million gallons, installed two miles from the runways, are discharging their load through underground pipes at a rate of 1,200 gallons per minute. The plane's fuel-pipe is simply connected to a nearly oil hydrant.

New runways extending over two miles will create a problem for 31 families in Rineanna who depend on work at the airport for a living. Their homes are going to be cut off from the terminal buildings and instead of the present half-mile walk they will have to cover a distance of seven miles by a round-about route.

Despite this inconvenience nobody is complaining. The villagers know that the new runways are essential to the continued existence of Shannon.

Said Tom Quinlivan, Rineanna's only publican: "I believe that most people will leave Rineanna and move to the far side of the Airport. Already cottages are springing up there."
For the extra airport staff and their families 150 houses will be built. Work is expected to be completed in one year.
