  • Description

World leaders have arriving in Cairo to attend the funeral tomorrow (Thursday, October the 1st) of President Nasser.

Among the first to arrive were President Boumedienne of Algeria and the Prime Minister of the Soviet Union, Mr. Kosygin, who reached the Egyptian capital last night (Tuesday).

Mr Kosygin was received at Cairo airport by the Egyptian Minister for War, General Mohammed Fawzy.

In a statement issued in Cairo by the Soviet Information Agency Novosti, Mr Kosygin hailed President Nasser as a comrade in arms in the joint struggle against Imperialism.

He expressed the profound grief of the Soviet Union at President Nasser's death and affirmed that the Soviet people would march alongside the Egyptian people through the path of mutual friendship, political and economic co-operation and joint struggle against Imperialism.

The funeral plans are for a helicopter to fly the body to the secluded palace on Gezira Island in the middle of Cairo where the then Colonel Nasser and his fellow revolutionaries planned for the future after the overthrow of King Farouk. There the body will be placed on a gun carriage for the eight mile (12 km) journey to its final resting place beneath the marble floor of a newly built mosque on the outskirts of Cairo. The building of the mosque was supervised by President Nasser and it has been named after him.
