    FIFTY-SIX PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM BUBONIC PLAGUE IN SOUTH VIETNAM IN THE FIRST 11 WEEKS OF THIS YEAR, ACCORDING TO AN AMERICAN SPOKESMAN. YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), POLICE AND HEALTH OFFICERS STEPPED UP THEIR FIGHT AGAINST THE PLAGUE IN GIA-DINH, NEAR SAIGON, THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPITAL.

    DURING THE CRACKDOWN ON THE DISEASE BUSES, CARS AND MOTORCYCLES WERE STOPPED AT A ROAD-BLOCK, AND THE OCCUPANTS INJECTED. THE VEHICLES THEMSELVES WERE SPRAYED WITH POWERFUL DISINFECTANT.

    RUBBISH DUMPS AND OTHER POTENTIALLY PLAGUE-RIDDEN AREAS HAVE ALSO COME UNDER THE ATTENTION OF HEALTH OFFICIALS.

    THE AMERICAN SPOKESMAN SAID 708 CASES OF BUBONIC PLAGUE HAD BEEN REPORTED UP TO 16 MARCH, AND 98 HAD BEEN CONFIRMED BY LABORATORY TEST. THE SPOKESMAN SAID HEALTH AUTHORITIES DID NOT CONSIDER THIS AN EPIDEMIC.

    THE SPOKESMAN SAID THAT COMPARED WITH LAST YEAR THERE HAD BEEN A DECREASE IN THE NUMBER OF SUSPECTED PLAGUE CASES.
