REUTERS, the great independent international news agency, which is 109 years old, will be associated with visual news reporting by becoming a shareholder in the BRITISH COMMONWEALTH INTERNATIONAL NEWSFILM AGENCY (BCINA) and a Member of the BCINA Trust. Reuters will also have a Director on the Board of BCINA.
BCINA, which was established in 1957, has a constitution modelled on that of Reuters, guaranteeing its integrity, freedom from bias of any kind and complete independence. The other shareholders in BCINA are: the BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION, the RANK ORGANISATION, the CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION and the AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING COMMISSION.
It is planned that from the entry of REUTERS into its ownership, the world resources of BCINA will be expanded and REUTERS will be linked with the rapidly developing realm of visual news reporting.
For over a century REUTERS has reported and distributed the world's news to the world while BCINA, since 1957, has been providing a service of impartial news on film - the VISNEWS SERVICE - to television stations in all parts of the world. The service is provided daily by the speediest means available including, in Europe, access to the Eurovision link.
The REUTER network of communications and correspondents stretches to every continent, with its own leased lines spanning Europe and radioteletype beams stretching to all key centres.
Each member makes a special contribution to the work of BCINA.
The BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION makes available all its newsfilm coverage.
The CANADIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION makes available its Canadian coverage.
The AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING COMMISSION in addition to supplying newsfilm from Australia, co-operates closely in South East Asia.
The facilities of the RANK ORGANISATION (the UK-based independent world film producers, exhibitors and technical equipment manufacturers), which has representation in every important centre of the world, are available as required.
BCINA's sole purpose is the servicing of a comprehensive world daily newsfilm report. Among the subscribers to the VISNEWS SERVICE are all the major West European television stations, three television stations in Eastern Europe and television stations in North America, Japan, the Middle East, North Africa, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.
In addition to its headquarters in London, BCINA has offices in Singapore, Paris, New York and Hilversum. BCINA staff cameramen are posted in the principal capitals of Europe, in the Middle East, and in South East Asia, and it has an international network of freelance cameramen to ensure that news is filmed wherever it breaks.
