  • Description

IN WEST BERLIN TODAY (MONDAY) SEVERAL THOUSAND TAXIS TOOK TO THE STREETS IN A PROTEST DRIVE AGAINST NEW REGULATIONS BEING ENFORCED BY THE WEST GERMAN GOVERNMENT. THE REGULATIONS REQUIRE THAT ALL TAXIS HAVE A BULLET-PROOF PARTITION SEPARATING THE DRIVER'S SEAT FROM THE PASSENGERS.

THE TAXI DRIVERS, WHO HAVE ASKED FOR THE DEATH PENALTY TO BE INTRODUCED FOR ROBBERY IN TAXIS, ARE AGAINST THE NEW PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES. THEY SAY THE GLASS PARTITION CONSTITUTES A DANGER TO DRIVER AND PASSENGERS IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT.

THE PROTEST DRIVE TOOK THE FORM OF A DOUBLE COLUMN OF TAXIS DRIVING FROM THE STREET OF THE 17TH. OF JUNE TO THE CITY HALL.

POLICE WATCHED THE DEMONSTRATION, AND LATER ASKED THE TAXI DRIVERS TO DISPERSE THEIR VEHICLES. THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INCIDENTS.

WEST GERMAN AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS HAVE OFFERED TO MAKE SPECIAL TAXIS FOR WEST GERMAN TAXI OWNERS, SIMILAR TO THE PORTIONED LONDON TAXI. HOWEVER, THE TAXI OWNERS HAVE REFUSED FOR SEVERAL REASONS, MAINLY BECAUSE THE SPECIAL TAXIS HAVE LITTLE RESALE VALUE.
