PRESIDENT FORD: "Mr. Chancellor, we live in demanding times. In the effort to solve the formidable economic and political problems confronting us today, close cooperation and mutural help have become infinitely more important than ever. Only by working together can we overcome the current difficulties facing our economies and the international economy."

HERR SCHMIDT: "The world is threatened by severe economic disruption. The Middle East conflict, whose settlement your administration is trying so hard to bring about, and the energy crisis, which followed in its wake, have suddenly opened our eyes to the fragile nature of the foundations on which our economic, social and political stability do rest. We are resolved to do everything within our capabilities to strengthen and further develop this partnership. The untroubled friendship between the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany seems to be an excellent basis for this."

Background: United States Gerald Ford went into two days of intensive talks with West German Chancellor, Helmut Schmidt, on Thursday (5 December) after welcoming the West German leader in a formal military ceremony on the White House lawns.

The critical world economic situation -- stemming chiefly from the soaring price of oil -- was at the forefront of their remarks as they greeted each other on the south lawn of the White House before a full military guard and senior government members from both countries.

President Ford called for closer international cooperation to overcome the severe problems of inflation and recession.

Herr Schmidt echoed the American President's remarks saying that the world's financial problems were making unprecedented demands and would require great strength and fortitude by all affected countries.

The West German Chancellor was later the luncheon guest of Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, and still later met members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and United States economic leaders.
