  • Description

THE UNDECLARED WAR NOW RAGING BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN HAS TAKEN A NEW AND TENSE TURN WITH AN ULTIMATUM TO INDIA FROM CHINA TO DISMANTLE MILITARY POSTS IN THE BORDER AREA OF SIKKIM.

CHINA ON THURSDAY GAVE INDIA THREE DAYS TO DISMANTLE THE POSTS, SAYING THAT IF THEY WERE NOT REMOVED INDIA WOULD HAVE TO BEAR RESPONSIBILITY FOR 'ALL THE GRAVE CONSEQUENCES.'
MEANWHILE, CHINESE TROOPS TODAY (SATURDAY) WERE UNOFFICIALLY REPORTED TO HAVE CROSSED INTO INDIAN TERRITORY NEAR LADAKH IN KASHMIR, EIGHT HUNDRED MILES WEST OF SIKKIM AND ONLY A FEW HOURS FROM THE SCENE OF FIGHTING BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN.

THE CHINESE ULTIMATUM AND REPORTED TROOPS MOVEMENTS IN KASHMIR HAVE COME AT A TIME WHEN THE UNITED NATIONS IS TRYING TO ARRANGE A CEASEFIRE BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN, AND WHEN THE UNITED STATES HAS CEASED ITS MILITARY AID TO INDIA TO HELP THE UNITED NATIONS MOVES. AN AMERICAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL SAID THAT IF CHINA ATTACKED INDIA, THE UNITED STATES WOULD RESUME ITS MILITARY AID TO INDIA.

SIKKIM IS A MOUNTAINOUS STRETCH OF LAND, SANDWICHED BETWEEN INDIA AND CHINA, AND SEPARATED FROM PAKISTAN BY ONLY A NARROW STRIP OF LAND.

IN 1962 THERE WERE CLASHES IN THE AREA BETWEEN CHINESE AND INDIAN TROOPS, AND NOW CHINA HAS ACCUSED INDIAN FORCES OF CROSSING INTO CHINESE TERRITORY ON THREE HUNDRED OCCASIONS.

LADAKH IS ALSO IN RUGGED MOUNTAINS IN NORTHERN KASHMIR NEAR THE CHINESE BORDER.

BOTH AREAS ARE HIGH IN THE HIMALAYA MOUNTAINS -- MORE THAN 20-THOUSAND FEET -- AND THE TERRAIN IS TORTUOUS, WITH RAGGED, STEEP SLOPES COVERED IN SNOW FOR MOST OF THE YEAR.

SIKKIM BECAME AN INDIAN PROTECTORATE WITH INDEPENDENCE IN 1947. BUT ALTHOUGH CHINA RECOGNISED BRITISH SOVEREIGNTY OF THE AREA UNDERRAN 1890 CONVENTION, SHE DOES NOT RECOGNISE INDIA'S SOVEREIGNTY.

MEANWHILE, THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL HAS CALLED AN EMERGENCY SESSION TODAY TO DISCUSS THE SITUATION.
