  • Description

Recruits for the army of Katanga - the breakaway Congolese province - are in training at a camp in the suburbs of the capital Elizabethville.

Estimates put the strength of the Katanga Army at some 600,000 men who belonged to the former Force Publique under Belgian officers. Some of the men mutinied against their officers as the Congo became independent but returned to service when the Prime Minister of Katanga, Moise Tshombe, declared the secession of the Province.

Some 200 Katanga soldiers and policemen under Belgian officers formed a guard of honour and something of a show strength - at the arrival in Elizabethville of U.N. Secretary - General Hammarskjoeld and 250 Swedish troops of the U.N. Force in the Congo August 13th. (5241/60 refers).

Civilian Hammarskjoeld's dramatic flight to the capital with his spearhead of troops to symbolise U.N. strength, followed a week of threats by the Katanga Prime Minister to use his army and tribesmen to fight the entry of U.N. soldiers into his country. Then came eleventh hour agreement permitting the entry of the U.N. troops - as a "bodyguard" for the Secretary-General.
