  • Description

PABLO CASALS, THE 86 YEAR-OLD SPANISH CELLIST AND CONDUCTOR, IS IN LONDON TO CONDUCT A PERFORMANCE OF HIS ORATORIO "EL PESSEBRE" ("THAT MANGER").

THIS IS CASAL'S FIRST VISIT TO ENGLAND FOR EIGHTEEN YEARS. HE IS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS SECOND WIFE MARTA, 27. HIS LONDON APPEARANCE IS PART OF HIS PERSONAL CRUSADE FOR PEACE WHICH BEGAN WHEN HE CONDUCTED HIS ORATORIO AT SAN FRANCISCO IN APRIL 1962. HE WAS CONDUCTED IT 15 TIMES IN TEN CITIES.

THE IDEA OF THE CRUSADE ORIGINATED IN 1958 WHEN CASALS WAS INVITED TO APPEAR BEFORE THE UNITED NATIONS AND PLAY AT THE WHIT HOUSE. THIS INSPIRED HIM TO COMPLETE "EL PESSEBRE" -- A SETTING FOR VOICE, CHORUS, AND ORCHESTRA OF A POEM BY ALAYEDRA, THE CATALAN POET.

EACH PERFORMANCE REQUIRES TWO REHEARSALS A DAY FOR TEN TO 12 DAYS. FILM SHOWS ONE OF THE REHEARSALS WITH THE LONDON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA. WHEN CASALS ARRIVED HE WAS ENTHUSIASTICALLY GREETED BY SIR AFRIAN BOULT, THE FAMOUS BRITISH CONDUCTOR.
