At Finnart, Loch Long, Scotland, VISNEWS June 9 filmed Vice-Admiral J.D. Luce, Flag Officer Scotland, opening Europe's first ocean terminal capable of berthing super-tankers of 100,000 tons or more at any time...British Petroleum's 42,000 tons flagship 'British Duchess', carrying crude oil from Kuwait, was the first ship to berth after the opening ceremony. She brought enough oil to meet all of Scotland's reeds for a month.
Terminal and jetty are an extension to the installation which has operated since 1951. It provides a low water depth of 55 feet.
The oil is fed from the jetty to a refinery at Grangemouth through sixty mile of underground pipe-line.
British Petroleum have taken great care to preserve the loveliness of the area and to prevent pollution in the Loch. Trees and shrubs screen the oil installation. Even storage tanks are cunningly concealed. Loch Long, on the Firth of Clyde, is one of the loveliest gateways to the Scottish Highlands.
