The United States Deputy Defence Secretary, Mr. David Packard has called for an urgent review?
The United States Deputy Defence Secretary, Mr. David Packard has called for an urgent review of the programme to build his country's latest naval fighter aircraft, the supersonic swing-wing Grumman F-14 -- known as the "Tomcat".
Earlier this week, the Defence Department revealed that spiralling costs on the project could amount to two thousand million dollars (GBP833 million sterling), bringing the overall cost of the programme to eleven thousand million dollars (GBP4,580 million sterling).
Because of the cost overrun, officials at the Pentagon are now thinking of cutting back the Navy's order for the aircraft from 710 to 38.....less than enough to fully equip two combat aircraft carriers. The first of the aircraft are due to be delivered to the navy in 1973.
This is the second F-14 test aircraft. The first crashed during its second flight last December. Film of this crash is contained in VISNEWS Production No. 12360/70.
