  • Description

AT THE MEETING OF THE MINISTERS OF THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY (COMMON MARKET) IN BRUSSELS TODAY (TUESDAY) PROBLEMS CONCERNING THE COMMERCIAL POLICY OF THE COMMUNITY WERE DISCUSSED.

ONE THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT RAISED WERE PROPOSALS FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF A SINGLE HARMONISED CEREAL PRICE IN THE COMMON MARKET BY NEXT JULY. THE AIM WILL BE ONE BASIC PRICE FIXED FOR EACH OF THE VARIOUS GRAINS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY. THESE BASIC PRICES WOULD BE REVIEWED ANNUALLY.

DR MANSHOLT, VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE E.E.C. COMMISSION SAID THAT THE COMMUNITY'S FURTHER INTERNAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE FORTHCOMING "KENNEDY ROUND" OF TARIFF NEGOTIATIONS WERE LARGELY DEPENDENT ON WHAT PROGRESS THE "SIX" MADE IN WORKING OUT A COMMON AGRICULTURAL POLICY.

"WE MUST KNOW WHAT OUR OWN CEREAL PRICES ARE BEFORE DISCUSSING TRADE IN GRAINS WITH THE UNITED STATES," HE SAID.

HERR SCHMUECKER, THE NEW GERMAN MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, TOOK HIS PLACE AT THE MEETING. HE WAS REPLACING DR ERHARD, WEST GERMANY'S CHANCELLOR, WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY HEADED HIS COUNTRY'S DELEGATION.
