THOUSANDS OF HINDU PILGRIMS LAST WEEK IGNORED REPORTS THAT CHINESE TROOPS WERE IN POSITIONS A FEW MILES AWAY AND CLIMBED 35 MILES OVER MOUNTAINS NEAR THE DISPUTED LADAKH RANGE IN KASHMIR TO THE HOLY CAVE OF SHIVA, ONE OF THE THREE MAIN HINDU GODS.

FILM SHOWS THE PILGRIMS, SAID TO NUMBER 13,000, WINDING THEIR WAY 15,000 FEET OVER NARROW MOUNTAIN PATHS. AFTER THREE DAYS, THEY ARRIVED AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CAVE WHERE SHIVA, KING AND DESTROYER OF THE WORLD AND LORD OF THE HIMALAYS, IS BELIEVED TO LIVE WITH HIS CONSORT, PARVATI.

MOST OF THE PILGRIMS WALKED, BUT SOME RODE ON PONIES, OR WERE CARRIED ON DANDIES, A TYPE OF LITTER. THE BASE CAMP FOR THE PILGRIMAGE WAS AT PAHALGAM, ONE OF THE LOVELIEST VALLEYS OF KASHMIR. DURING THE CLIMB, THE PILGRIMS PASSED COOL MOUNTAIN STREAMS AND LAKES, MANY OF WHICH ARE REGARDED AS SACRED.

AS THE PILGRIMS CAME WITHIN SIGHT OF THE CAVE, THE CHANTING OF HYMNS AND PRAYERS ECHOED ROUND THE MOUNTAINS. OUTSIDE, TENTS WERE SET UP AND MEALS PREPARED BEFORE THE HINDUS FILED INTO THE VAST CAVE TO WORSHIP THEIR GOD.

(THE DAY THE PILGRIMAGE STARTED, MR NEHRU TOLD THE INDIAN PARLIAMENT IN NEW DELHI THAT TROOPS OF THE CHINESE PEOPLES' REPUBLIC HAD FIRED ON INDIAN TROOPS THREE TIMES IN THE LADAKH AREA SINCE JULY 27. HE SAID NO DAMAGE WAS DONE, BUT THE SITUATION "REMAINS SERIOUS ALONG THE FRONTIER AS IN THE PAST, AND IS LIKELY TO CONTINUE IN THE FUTURE.")
