  • Description

With the lighting of a symbolic lamp, Japanese Ambassador Sashichiro Matsui opened the first phase of a major fisheries redevelopment in the Sri Lanka port of Galle on Thursday (March 15).

He was joined in the opening by the chairman of the Sri Lanka Fisheries, Mr. G.G. Mendis.

The redevelopment of the Galle port is part of Japan's aid to Sri Lanka this year. Japan, the Untied States and West Germany are giving the largest shares of GBP 26.6 million sterling (66 million dollars approx.) foreign aid going to Sri Lanka this year. Most of the aid is for community development projects like the fisheries development.

The opening of the Japanese-sponsored development coincided with a visit by a 30-member team of Japanese businessmen who were studying Sri Lanka's investment projects -- including plans to develop a free trade zone in a harbour that was once a British naval base.
