WALDHEIM: "I declare open the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. We have come to Stockholm because we have a common concern, a common stake and interest in our only one earth. We are here to protect an interest and enhance the human environment today and for future generations. I hope that during your joint endeavours during the next two weeks we may advance towards this goal."



BENGTSON: "The problems which have brought us together are universally-recognised to be of vital interest to mankind. All the inhabitants of this planet have a stake in overcoming them. This conference is a sign that the international community is ready to take the first steps towards this goal. Background: United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim opened the first-ever U.N. Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm on Monday (5 June). In his address the Secretary-General said that the delegates had come to Stockholm because of a common interest in the fate of the earth.

In his address at the opening ceremony attended by Sweden's King Gustav Adolf and more than 1,000 delegates from 112 countries, Mr Waldheim said he hoped that in the next two weeks, progress towards the goal of protecting and enhancing the environment could be attained.

Later, he urged all countries to sink their political differences in the greater cause of saving planet earth from human pollution and exploitation.

But his words were largely unheard by many communist countries. Only the People's Republic of China, Rumania and Yugoslavia were represented. The Soviet Union and most of its allies are boycotting the conference because of the exclusion of East Germany from full participation.

Another speaker at the opening meeting was Mr. Ingemund Bengtson, the conference's newly-elected President. He told the delegates that all of the world's inhabitants have a stake in overcoming the problems which the conference is trying to face.
