  • Description

Egypt's State Security Court on Sunday (20 February) heard a plea for the release of four Palestinians charged with assassinating Jordanian Premier Wasfi Tell in Cairo last November. The day before (Saturday 19 February) the defendants had pleaded guilty, but Libya's leader....Colonel Gaddafi....has offered his personal surety for their release until the trial proper begins. This, in the opinion of Defence lawyers, was a sufficient guarantee. The defence plea developed into a courtroom attack on King Hussein of Jordan, with former Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Mr. Ahmed Shukairy....one of the defence lawyers .... strongly condemning the Jordanian regime. He referred to Mr. Tell as a "tool of imperialism" and said an end to the present rule in Jordan would mean an end to all Arab disasters. Mr. Shukairy said he considered Mr. Toll's uprooting a good omen that similar agents were about to meet the same fate, according to Reuters reports.
