  • Description

The Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Constantine Karamanlis, said on Wednesday (20 October) that his country world retain control over United States bases in Greece.

SYNOPSIS: In a speech to the Greek Parliament in Athens, Mr. Karamanlis said that according to the bases treaty now under negotiation with the United States, no nuclear weapons were to be stored on American bases in Greece. He said these bases would not be used for war purposes without the express consent of the Greek government.

Mr. Karamanlis said the new treaty would not be signed until after the United States presidential elections, so the Greek side would be fully aware of the intentions of the American government in case of change. Agreement was reached to maintain four major installations -- a naval-air base at Suda, communications bases at Iraklion and Nea Makri, and an air base at Athens airport.

He said the base would become Greek installations, under a Greek commander, and the Americans would be granted facilities. He also said Greece had placed orders for arms worth GBP150 million (250 million dollars U.S.) with West Germany.
