  • Description

President Anwar Sadat of Egypt warned on Wednesday (July 26) that there is still a long struggle ahead in the conflict between Egypt and Israel and said that nature and history are on the side of the Arabs.

The President was speaking to delegates attending the closing session of the Arab Socialist Union (ASU) General congress -- Egypt's sole political organisation. His speech -- the second to the congress in 48 hours -- followed a personal appeal from Israeli Prime Minister, Mrs. Coloa Meir, got direct talks between the two leaders in an effort to find a solution to the dispute.

President Sadat, however, has previously said he regards direct talks with the Israelis as tantamount to admitting "surrender". And shortly after his seven-minute speech, officials in Cairo were quoted as saying Egypt's position on the issue remained unchanged.

Mrs Meir's olive branch followed president Sadat's order last week to end the Soviet presence in Egypt. President Sadat told the ASU delegates in his earlier speech that he had made the order because Moscow had failed to meet its arms commitments to Egypt.

In another speech to the Congress, the Secretary-General of the ASU, Mr. Sayeo Marei, told the President that the Party's National congress had given its full approval to his decision to end Soviet military presence in the country.
