??? Bangkok and the ??? province of ??? were ??? on Tuesday (2 October) when railway workers staged a one day lightning strike. The men walked off the job in protest over the suspension of the driver of the freight train involved in last August's train disaster in which 53 people dead.

SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of armed police were quickly dispatched to affected railway stations to prevent striking workers from obstructing train services.

Thai Prime Minister Kriangsak Chamanad said the authorities would not tolerate the strike as it contravened the legal processes of the labour law.

Tens of thousands of passengers were left stranded and freight services were crippled.

The strikers are demanding legal protection for engineers involved in accidents while performing their duties.

Since last August's accident, the worst in Thai history, a number of railway engineers and officials have been arrested.

Railwaymen claim that management's refusal to improve the signalling system was one of the major causes of the crash.

Talks aimed at resolving the dispute remained deadlocked following five hours of discussion.

Prime Minister Kriangsak said he would show no leniency to the strikers and would be prosecuted for their actions.
