Background: JUNE 4 WILL BE THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE MIDDLE EAST WAR BETWEEN ISRAEL AND THE ARAB STATES. ON THE LOSING SIDE WAS JORDAN AND NOW IN MAY 1968, THE PEOPLE OF JORDAN ARE FACING AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE, BOTH ECONOMICALLY AND STRATEGICALLY. SKIRMISHES WITH THE ISRAELIS ARE STILL COMMON OCCURRENCES AND THE REFUGEE PROBLEM REMAINS UNSOLVED.

THE JUNE WAR CRIPPLED JORDAN'S DEFENCES. HER AIR FORCE WAS WIPED OUT IN HOURS AND THE ARMY, ALTHOUGH IT FOUGHT BRAVELY, WAS SAVAGELY MAULED BY THE ISRAELI ARMOUR. THE ISRAELIS OCCUPIED ALL JORDANIAN TERRITORY AS FAR AS THE RIVER JORDAN AND 150-THOUSAND REFUGEES POURED ACROSS THE RIVER TO SEEK REFUGE UNDER KING HUSSEIN'S GOVERNMENT. LAST WINTER, THE REFUGEES WERE HOUSED IN TENTED CAMPS IN THE JORDAN VALLEY BUT WITH THE COMING SPRING THERE WAS RENEWED MILITARY ACTIVITY. SHELLFIRE AND AIRCRAFT ATTACKS DROVE THE REFUGEES FURTHER INLAND. THEY MADE TOWARDS JORDAN'S CAPITAL, AMMAN. BUT AMMAN, WHOSE POPULATION HAS VIRTUALLY DOUBLED SINCE THE JUNE WAR, COULD NOT COPE WITH THE INFLUX.

WITH NO MORE LIVING SPACE OR WORK AVAILABLE IN AMMAN, THE REFUGEES ARE BEING HOUSED IN CAMPS OUTSIDE THE CITY. THERE IS LITTLE WORK BUT THERE IS SOME HOPE THAT ONE DAY THEY WILL RETURN TO THEIR WEST BANK HOMELAND. THESE ARE MAINLY PEOPLE WHO WORK THE LAND AND THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT INDUSTRIAL LIFE IN ANY CASE JORDAN HAS LITTLE INDUSTRY. ITS MAIN SOURCE OF INCOME BEFORE THE MIDDLE EAST WAR WAS TOURISM AND TOURISM THRIVES ON PEACE AND STABILITY. WHEN STABILITY WILL RETURN TO JORDAN IS AN UNANSWERED QUESTION.
