Background: INTRODUCTION: In Greece, left-wing students held a three-day event to commemorate the eighth anniversary of the polytechnic students' uprising in 1973 which led to the downfall of the military junta. The event ended on Sunday (15 November) with a march on the United States embassy in Athens. The students say America supported the seven year rule of the military junta between 1967 and 1974.

SYNOPSIS: Nearly 200,000 people gathered at the Polytechnic in Athens on Sunday (15 November) to pay tribute to the thousands of students who barricaded themselves inside the building in 1973 and demanded the resignation of the junta.

There were many floral tributes to the 30 people who died when the military regime sent troops and tanks to evict the students.More than a thousand people were injured when the polytechnic was attacked.

Right-wing students took no part in the events but there was strong left-wing support and many banners bore political and anti-American slogans. In the past conservative governments have banned marches to the American embassy.but the new left-wing government gave permission.Last year one person was killed and a hundred injured in clashes when students defied the ban but this year's march was free from incident.
