  • Description

OVER ONE-THOUSAND STUDENTS AT THE CHINESE LANGUAGE NANYANG UNIVERSITY IN SINGAPORE HELD A THREE-DAY BOYCOTT OF CLASSES, AND RALLIED ON WEDNESDAY AS A PROTEST AGAINST THE EXPULSION OF 80 LEFT-WING UNDERGRADUATES.
DURING THE BOYCOTT, POLICE USED TEAR GAS TO BREAK UP ANOTHER DEMONSTRATION. THE EXPELLED STUDENTS WERE DISMISSED FOR THEIR PART IN RECENT BRAWLS WITH STAFF MEMBERS OVER A GOVERNMENT PLAN TO REORGANISE THE UNIVERSITY.
IN THE VIOLENCE, STUDENTS HAVE THROWN BOTTLES AND STONES AND TRIED TO SET FIRE TO A UNIVERSITY HOSTEL WITH A 45-GALLON DRUM OF PARAFFIN. APART FROM TEAR-GAS AS A WEAPON, POLICE ASSIGNED TO THE UNIVERSITY, HAVE BEEN ARMED WITH CARBINES AND MACHINE-GUNS AND TROOPS WERE CALLED IN TO PROVIDE EXTRA COVER.
SOME 2,000 STUDENTS ARE AT THE UNIVERSITY. THE RALLY SPOKESMAN CLAIMED THEY HAD THE SUPPORT OF 800. THE BOYCOTT PREVENTED THE GENERAL STUDENT BODY FROM ATTENDING CLASSES AND BROUGHT THE UNIVERSITY TO A STANDSTILL.
AT THIS RALLY, THE POLICE KEPT IN THE BACKGROUND AND THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS AS A VOTE WAS TAKEN TO CONTINUE THE BOYCOTT INDEFINITELY.
