    Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny on Tuesday (20 May) opened national celebrations marking the United Nations' International Women's Year.

    The Government invited U.S. Under-Secretary for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs Mme. Helvi Sipila to attend the celebrations. Mme. Sipila is also the Secretary-General for International Women's Year.

    Celebrations throughout the Ivory Coast began on Tuesday with the meeting of the Ivory Coast Women's Association addressed by the Head of State, Mme. Sipila and the Association's President, Mme. Jeanne Gervais.

    During his address, President Houphouet-Boigny said women would be called upon more and more to assume responsible positions in Ivory Coast society.
