Background: MORE THAN 3,000 TRIBAL PEOPLE FROM THE MIDNAPORE DISTRICT OF WEST BENGAL HAVE TAKEN THEIR PROTEST OVER THE GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE ON WELFARE TO THE WEST BENGAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE. TRAVELLING THE 70 MILES FROM THEIR HOMES TO CALCUTTA, THEY YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) PROTESTED AT THE ASSEMBLY FOR INCREASED CONSIDERATION ON LAND, LABOUR, EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT.

THE TRIBAL PEOPLE, LED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY MARCHED ON THE STATE ASSEMBLY AND TOOK UP POSITIONS OUTSIDE THE GATES.

THEY DEMANDED TO SEE THE CHIEF MINISTER, MR. AJOY MUKHERJI, WHO LATER CAME TO THE GATES AND SPOKE TO THE CROWD.

THE STATE TRIBAL MINISTER, MR. DEO PRAKASH RAI, ALSO ADDRESSED THEM.

BOTH ASSURED THE CROWD OF THE GOVERNMENT'S ATTENTION FOR THEIR WELFARE.

IN OTHER PARTS OF WEST BENGAL, 50,000 TEXTILE WORKERS IN 23 MILLS WENT ON A DAY'S STRIKE TO DEMAND MORE WAGES.
