  • Description

TROOPS AND POLICE CLASHED WITH DEMONSTRATORS IN THE STREETS OF CALCUTTA, INDIA, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) DURING THE CITY'S SECOND 24-HOUR GENERAL STRIKE IN A WEEK. IT FOLLOWS THE STATE GOVERNOR'S DISMISSAL OF THE UNITED FRONT'S GOVERNMENT OF WEST BENGAL FOR REFUSING TO CALL AN ASSEMBLY AND DEMONSTRATE ITS MAJORITY, ON WHICH THE LEFT-WING UNITED FRONT BASES ITS CLAIM FORM A GOVERNMENT AFTER THE RECENT ELECTIONS.

YESTERDAY' A CLASHES WERE ON A SMALL SCALE COMPARED WITH LAST WEEK'S VIOLENCE, IN WHICH AT LEAST EIGHT PEOPLE WERE KILLED. THE POLICE, BACKED BY THOUSANDS OF TROOPS, ACTED QUICKLY YESTERDAY TO MAINTAIN ORDER. ALTHOUGH PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND COMMERCIAL LIFE IN GENERAL WAS ALMOST AT A STANDSTILL, FACTORIES IN CALCUTTA'S INDUSTRIAL SUBURBS WERE REPORTED TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY.

IN THE CALCUTTA PRISON YESTERDAY, 16 PRISONERS HELD DURING THE DEMONSTRATIONS JOINED 20 PRISONERS ALREADY STAGING A HUNGER STRIKE TO BACK THEIR DEMAND FOR SPECIAL TREATMENT AS POLITICAL PRISONERS.
