Savage tornadoes cut a lethal path through the American midwest Wednesday (17 April).

They left a trail of death and destruction. One young mother was killed and at least 70 other people were injured.

The worst destruction was at Kankakee, Illinois, 50 miles south of Chicago. There, the tornado destroyed a trailer camp on the campus of Olivet-Nazarene College, used by students and their families. The killer wind also wrecked college buildings. It cut a path 300 yards wide and 3 miles long, striking into six communities and leaving damages estimated at two and one-half million dollars.

About 200 persons were left homeless after the tornado turned eastward and swung into the neighbouring midwest state of Indiana, where it caused the most damage in a town called Giffore.

Violent winds struck other parts of the American midwest, too. Many areas suffered loss of electrical power as well as property damages.
