    MORE THAN FIVE THOUSAND SHIPYARD WORKERS AND TRADE UNIONIST YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) DEMONSTRATED IN MARSEILLES AGAINST THE PROJECTED CLOSURE OF SHIPYARDS AT PORT DE BOUC AND LA SEYNE.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS INCLUDED SHIPYARD WORKERS FROM YARDS OUTSIDE MARSEILLES. THEY MARCHED FROM THE OLD DOCK ARE THROUGH THE CENTRE OF THE CITY TO A RALLY IN THE DOCK AREA.

    THE DEMONSTRATION WAS SUPPORTED BY SEVERAL FRENCH MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT, AND THE MAYOR OF MARSEILLES, MONSIEUR GASTON DEFFERRE, AND OPPOSITION CANDIDATE IN THE RECENT FRENCH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.

    THE SHIPYARDS ARE FACED WITH CLOSURE FOLLOWING REPORTED HEAVY FINANCIAL LOSSES. SEVERAL THOUSAND MEN WILL BE THROWN OUT OF WORK BY THE SHUTDOWN.

    FINANCIAL EXPERTS ARE AT PRESENT INVESTIGATING THE FINANCIAL AFFAIRS OF THE COMPANY OPERATING THE YARDS, AND THERE HAVE BEEN CONSULTATIONS ON THE THREATENED CLOSURES BETWEEN THE PRIME MINISTER, M. POMPIDOU AND THE MINISTER OF FINANCE, M. DEBRE.
