A delegation form the Council of Europe's Consultative Assembly is visiting Israel. On Monday (12 March), the Assembly's President, Prof. Giuseppe Vodevato, paid a courtesy visit to the Knesset (Parliament) building in Jerusalem at the invitation of the Speaker, Mr. Yeshayahu. Negotiations are taking place for a new trade agreement between Israel and the enlarged European Economic Community. The new treaty is expected to be signed later this year.
Prof. Vodevato laid a wreath for Israeli war dead in the grounds of the Knesset and set in the VIPs gallery while Parliament was in session.
Prof. Vodevato said "Israel belongs to Europe", and expressed the hope that Israeli delegates would one day attend the Council of Europe as members with full rights.
He was accompanied on the visit by the Vice-President of the European body, Mr. Getano Adolfi, and Mr. Sergio Galli, another members of the delegation. The visitors were received by the Clerk of the Knesset, Mr. Netanel Lorch. Prof. Vodevato talked with the Speaker of the Knesset for nearly an hour. The flag of t he Council of Europe flew over the building during the visit.
