Background: World champion Giacomo Agostini of Italy won first place in both the 350 cc and the 500 cc motor cycle Grand Prix events on the Sachsenring in East Germany yesterday (12 July). He is the first rider to win five successive 500 cc world championships.
In the 500 cc event, Agostini gained an unbeatable 73-point lead and lapped every rider except John Dodds of Australia, who-on a Linto-won second place. Agostini clocked one hour three minutes 45.1 seconds in the 180.97 km (112.38 mile) event. He averaged 170.24 (105.75 MPH) and clocked a fastest lap of two minutes 59.2 seconds at a speed of 173.05 KPH (107.46 MPH).
Martin Carney of Britain, on a Kawasaki, came third in the 500 cc event.
