  • Description

Interdenominational church services for peace were held throughout Northern Ireland and the neighbouring Irish Republic on Sunday (October 1). One of the biggest services was held at a Belfast cemetery -- and although it was in the middle of several trouble sports, and bus services there had been cancelled because of weekend violence, about three thousand people attended.

The violence over the weekend, meanwhile, brought a major personal tragedy to a couple living in Marlborough, Southern England. For a soldier who died in a Belfast gun battle on Saturday (September 30) was the second of their three soldier sons to be killed in Northern Ireland. The first died in an ambush September last year (1971). During the weekend the third brother was permanently withdrawn from the province on compassionate grounds.
