  • Description

A 63-year-old African tribal chief accused Rhodesian police of brutality when he appeared in court on Thursday (May 6) charged under the Law and Order Maintenance Act.

Rekayi Tangwena, self-styled leader of the Tangwena Tribe, is alleged to have made subversive statements, contravening the Act which guards the country's internal peace and security.

He pleaded "Not Guilty" at Salisbury Regional Court. He told the court that when police moved his people from white-owned land last year they used brutality in trying to provoke tribesmen into retaliatory action.

The charges stem from a tape-recorded interview Chief Tangwena is alleged to have given to the American Nationalist magazine, "Struggle" - official organ of the outlawed Zimbabwe African People's Union.
