PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA IS SHOWING INCREASING CONCERN AS TO THE WELL-DOING OF ZAMBIA'S COPPER ????

  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA IS SHOWING INCREASING CONCERN AS TO THE WELL-DOING OF ZAMBIA'S COPPER ??? INDUSTRY. LAST MONTH HE ATTENDED A SERIES OF 'PRODUCTIVITY SEMINARS' IN THE COUNTRY'S MINING TOWNS, DURING WHICH HE MADE SEVERAL HARD-HITTING COMMENTS ON THE NEED TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY.

ONE OF THE PORTS OF CALL WAS KIYWE, WHERE A ROUSING WELCOME AWAITED DR. KAUNDA AND HIS TEAM OF EXPERTS. BUT FOR ALL THE EXUBERANCE OF THE GREETING, THE PRESIDENT HAD SOME SERIOUS COMMENTS TO MAKE. STATISTICS SHOW THAT THE PRODUCTIVITY OF THE COPPER MINING INDUSTRY HAS SLUMPED SINCE INDEPENDENCE IN 1964. THE PRESIDENT'S REPEATED MESSAGE WAS THAT ONLY HARD WORK COULD IMPROVE MATTERS, DR. KAUNDA ALSO POINTED TO ANOTHER THREAT TO PRODUCTIVITY - THE SO-CALLED 'EVILS OF TRIBALISM'. 'NIGERIA', SAID THE PRESIDENT, 'STANDS AS A SAD EXAMPLE. THE CONGO STANDS AS A SAD EXAMPLE. IS THERE ANY REASON WHY THAT SHOULD BE REPEATED HERE?'.

PRESIDENT KAUNDA HAD A SIMILAR MESSAGE FOR CHINGOLA, WHERE HE WAS WELCOMED BY MR. GANDAR, THE GENERAL MINES MANAGER. WITH HIM WAS THE MINISTER CONDEMNED LOW PRODUCTIVITY, AND ASSERTED THAT UNLESS ZAMBIA WORKED HARDER, IT WOULD BECOME A PAUPER NATION, RESPECTED BY NO-ONE.

AT MUFLIRA, ACCOMPANIED BY MR. PETER CHANDA, THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR THE WESTERN PROVINCE, DR. KAUNDA SPOKE STRONGLY AGAINST THE PATTERN OF MORE AND MORE MONEY BEING SPENT ON URBAN AREAS, WHILE THERE REMAINED STAGGERING POVERTY IN THE VILLAGES. AGAIN, WORK COULD HELP TO REDRESS THIS BALANCE, SAID THE PRESIDENT: 'PEOPLE WHO WORK HARD ARE LOVED AND RESPECTED BY EVERYONE'.
